<itunes:summary>Kazakhstan's Aral Sea was once the world's fourth largest lake, a rich haven for fish, birds and other wildlife. It was also home to bustling fishing ports such as Aralsk. But starting in the 1960s, massive agricultural expansion saw much of the water from the two rivers that feed the lake diverted into thousands of canals to irrigate crops. This caused the Aral Sea to shrink by 70% and split into two.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>How a company is giving waste plastics one more life by turning them into synthetic fuel at their plant in Ireland.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>We have produced more plastic in the last ten years than we did in the whole of the last century. Plastic takes 100 years to degrade, which means that every single piece we have not recycled still exists. Many of the plastic items we throw away can be recycled into new products – but some types, known as 'end-of-life' plastics, currently have no second life and end up in landfill, where they can release hazardous chemicals into the environment. How to deal with these plastics is one of the most pressing questions for businesses and local authorities. Technology company Cynar is giving these waste plastics one more life by turning them into synthetic fuel at their plant in Portlaoise, Ireland. Using a process called pyrolysis, plastics are heated in an oxygen-free environment to prevent them from burning, and then broken into their component hydrocarbons to create the equivalent of a petroleum distillate. This can then be separated into different fuels. The end products are cleaner, lower in sulphur and in the case of the diesel, higher quality than regular diesel fuel. Cynar is currently able to produce 19,000 litres of fuel from 20 tonnes of waste plastic. The company plans to set up more plants across the UK, and with 15 million tonnes of plastics still going into landfill in Europe every year, they have plenty of raw materials at their disposal. Oliver Steeds of the earthrise team visits the Cynar plant in Ireland, to find out how the process works.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>earthrise visits Bangka Botanical Garden, which has been turned from a barren wasteland into a thriving habitat.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Bangka Island in Indonesia has a long history of tin mining. Years of extraction have taken their toll on the land, leaving it acidic, cratered and unsuitable for agriculture. A group of businessmen who used to be involved in the mining industry are in the process of transforming 300 hectares of this ruined land, turning it into a lush botanical garden with fisheries, paddocks, fruit gardens and paddy fields. Dolomite limestone is used initially to reduce the acidity of the soil, but perhaps the most important ingredient for restoring the land to a usable state is cow dung from the garden's resident herd of 400 cattle. Having been fermented for two weeks to revive the microbes, a tonne of the dung is added to the soil each day. At the very beginning of the process, 15 tonnes per hectare is needed. The cows are fed with grass grown in the garden, and the milk they produce is given free to local school children. <itunes:subtitle>A Kenyan company has developed a micro wind turbine made using scrap, which can charge a phone and power a light bulb.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In Kenya, the national grid reaches just 18 per cent of its population, which means an estimated 30 million people are forced to use environmentally damaging and expensive alternatives like kerosene, diesel and dry cell batteries.

Disposable batteries for portable radios, for example, last just one week before they are thrown away - corroding and leaching hazardous chemicals into the soil.

Access Energy, a local social enterprise, has developed a micro wind turbine to provide communities with a cheaper and cleaner source of power.

Swaziland-born Dr Sam Duby and his team of engineers construct the turbines primarily from scrap materials, and lease them out as well as sell them – making the technology affordable for a broader range of potential customers.

The micro turbines do not generate a huge amount of electricity – enough to charge a phone and power a lightbulb – but this is enough for most people’s needs.

In rural areas especially, it is often necessary to travel long distances to charge batteries and phones, and according to Sam Duby the turbines could provide power to people within a radius of up to 20km to 30km.

Based in the Western Kenyan port city of Kisumu, Access Energy works closely with Jua Kali, the informal manufacturing sector, to source suitable waste materials for the turbines.

They have come up with some ingenious ways to adapt locally available scrap, for example, standard car alternators are fitted with extra turns of copper, which means it can generate electricity when spinning at a much slower speed than it would in a car.

Using these local items and avoiding imported goods keeps prices low, and gives waste materials a second life.

Russell Beard of the Earthrise team joins Access Energy as they search for suitable scrap in Jua Kala, and construct a turbine for a new customer.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Micro turbines electrify rural Kenya; turning ‘end-of-life’ plastic into fuel; and reviving a wasteland in Indonesia.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In Kenya the national grid reaches just 18 per cent of its population, which means an estimated 30m people are forced to use environmentally damaging and expensive alternatives like kerosene, diesel and dry cell batteries. We have produced more plastic in the last ten years than we did in the whole of the last century. Many of the plastic items we throw away can be recycled into new products – but some types, known as “end-of-life” plastics, currently have no second life and end up in landfill, where they can release hazardous chemicals into the environment. However, technology company Cynar is giving these plastics one more life by turning them into synthetic fuel at their plant in Portlaoise, Ireland. The end products are cleaner, lower in sulphur and in the case of the diesel, higher quality than regular diesel fuel. Cynar is currently able to produce 19,000 litres of fuel from 20 tonnes of waste plastic, and the company plans to set up more plants across the UK. Oliver Steeds travels to Ireland to find out how the process works.

Bangka Island in Indonesia has a long history of tin mining. An estimated 2,000 species of flora and 200 of fauna are now living in the garden. Amanda Burrell reports.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Will Belize's ban on destructive fishing encourage other countries to take bolder steps towards protecting their marine environments?</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Belize is proud to have the longest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere. But in 2010, the tiny country faced a huge problem – the potential loss of the reef's UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Already under threat from coastal development, pollution and climate change, the reef's species were being depleted by bottom-dragging fish trawlers. Local fishermen operating from small boats complained they were being prevented form making a living by what many critics call the maritime equivalent of strip mining or clear-cut logging. With miles-long nets that scrape the ocean bottom, a trawling fleet can strip the ocean bare, making no distinction between food fish and any other species of plant and animal. A report revealed that 60 per cent of the reef, which is vital habitat for fish, was in poor to critical condition - and only eight per cent was in good condition. This highly destructive form of fishing also jeopardised a major source of revenue from tourism - the country's number one foreign exchange earner. More than 200,000 tourists visit the Caribbean country each year, mainly to dive or fish. In December 2010, Belize became one of the world's first nations to ban trawling in its waters. Forgoing the revenues from fees and taxes provided by trawling fleets, political and business leaders decided that long-term economic prospects were better served by protecting the barrier reef and other coastal waters by making sure that fish stocks remained healthy. The ban had the support of local fishermen, who now practice a low-impact form of fish harvesting to supply markets. Resort owners also hailed the move, recognising that the ban would protect local jobs. Since the ban was enforced an environmental organisation, Oceana, has helped to purchase two idled trawlers docked in Belize, which will be re-purposed. For this segment of earthrise, Sharita Hutton travels to Belize to meet some of the people involved in campaigning for the ban, which, it is hoped, will encourage other countries to take bolder steps towards protecting their marine environments.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>A Swiss-led venture tries to change the direction of future maritime travel with the world's largest solar-powered sea vessel.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Shipping is one of the fastest growing and most heavily polluting industries.

Shipping fuel releases ultra-fine soot particles which can damage health, as well as various global warming pollutants including black carbon from incomplete fuel combustion, nitrogen oxides, nitrous oxide and of course CO2.

Despite the recent introduction of mandatory efficiency targets for shipping vessels, these do not come into force until 2015 - and many of the restrictions can be circumvented.

Reducing industry’s environmental impact will clearly take a long time.

A Swiss-led venture, PlanetSolar, is attempting to change the direction of future maritime travel with Tûranor, the world’s largest solar-powered sea vessel.

The 31-metre-long catamaran, which is covered with 600 square metres of photovoltaic panels, stores solar energy in the world’s largest lithium ion battery. It drives the vessel's silent, pollution-free electric motor, which can continue to operate in the absence of sunlight for around three days.

The ship’s name, inspired by Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, means "power of the sun".

Its creators believe that high-performance solar mobility can be realised today by making innovative use of existing materials and technology, and they aim to take an active part in advancing research in renewable energy.

As Raphaël Domjan, the project's pioneer explains: "We want to be the Phileas Fogg of the 21st century… our project is meant to serve the environment and to enable solar energy to replace fossil fuels, and to motivate engineers and scientists to develop these technologies".

In December 2010, the Tûranor began an epic 19 month voyage in a bid to become the first entirely “solar” vessel to circumnavigate the globe.

Assisted by French meteorologists, the crew of four chose the most efficient course according to weather conditions, following an equatorial route to maximise sunshine.

For this segment of Earthrise, Oliver Steeds boards the Tûranor in the Red Sea to join the crew for a leg of this historic voyage.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>earthrise travels to Alicante to find out if algae biofuels really could be the oil of the future.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Clean electricity can be generated using technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines, but a more sustainable alternative to oil – which powers most forms of transport – is proving harder to find. So-called first and second generation biofuels such as soybean and jatropha have been criticised by environmental groups who say they contribute to deforestation and compete with food crops. According to some calculations biofuels such as palm oil emit more CO2 than crude oil.

A better alternative could be algae, which can produce oil intensively, doubling their mass several times a day and using waste products such as sewage or CO2 from factories to grow. Barack Obama, the US president, has suggested that in the future up to 17 per cent of the fuel the country imports for transport could be replaced by algae biofuels.

In Alicante, Spain, a small company called Bio Fuel Systems (BFS) is running an experimental biofuel plant which uses waste CO2 from a neighbouring cement factory to grow algae in hundreds of tubes that are each eight metres high. The company claims they can produce a staggering 400 times more oil per hectare than traditional biofuels such as soybean or palm oil, and the final product has exactly the same characteristics as fossil oil, but with an important difference.

The idea is to locate algae fuel plants next to heavy-emitting factories and power stations, using their CO2 to feed the algae – and making the oil effectively carbon-negative.

Early results have been so successful that the company now plans to open a 600 hectare site next to a coal-fired power plant in arid southern Spain, with the aim of producing algae-based oil on a commercial scale.

earthrise's Russell Beard visits BFS's plant in Alicante to find out if this really could be the fuel of the future.</itunes:summary>
