One of the most prominent candidates was Imran Khan, former international cricket star turned politician, whose Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) was competing for office with the country's two largest parties, the PPP and the PLM-N.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>By 2014 America aims to have withdrawn all its troops from Afghanistan, but will stability be achieved?</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>By 2014, in line with a pledge made by President Barack Obama, America aims to have withdrawn all its combat troops from Afghanistan. Indeed, quietly and unobtrusively, that process has already begun. As units come to the end of their tour of duty they are not being replaced, military hardware is being packed into containers and trucks ready for the long trip home and responsibility for the country's security is gradually being handed over to units of the Afghan Army and police. People & Power has been tracking the countdown to the withdrawal through an occasional series of films on the latter days of the Nato coalition's long ground war against the Taliban.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>After two years the civil war in Syria shows no immediate sign of coming to an end. Though exact numbers are difficult to determine it is likely that hundreds of thousands of people have been injured or killed. Millions more have been displaced and communities across the country have been irremediably scarred by fighting that has seen homes, schools, businesses and hospitals destroyed. Yet those opposed to the Assad regime show no signs of faltering. Something keeps them at the front line - even though they are outgunned and often desperately short of everything from ammunition to medical supplies.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Proposed programme by Dutch diplomat aims to end the violence that 'conflict minerals' have caused in South Kivu.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>South Kivu in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is both infamous for its vicious and seemingly never-ending civil conflict and envied for its vast natural resources.
These abundant minerals– from tin to coltan - are in huge international demand; vital to the economies of the developed world as key components in high-tech electronic consumer goods, from laptops and tablets to smart phones and flat screen TVs.
But this demand has also helped make these strategically important metals a key driver of the endemic conflict in this part of the country – violence that has led to the deaths of nearly six million in over a decade.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>How the Obama administration is redefining US military's strategic priorities with far-reaching consequences.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>The United States' military expenditures today account for about 40 percent of the world total. In 2012, the US spent some $682bn on its military - an amount more than what was spent by the next 13 countries combined.

Now that the war in Iraq is over and the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan will be complete in 2014, the stage might therefore appear to be set for a decrease in US defence spending. Even in Washington DC, many have argued that the defence budget can be cut substantially and the resulting "peace dividend" could be diverted to more pressing domestic concerns, such as dealing with the nation's continuing economic problems.</itunes:summary>

With an ambitious, progressive government, a population of around 193 million, now well established federal democratic structures and apparent political stability, many even see it as a global superpower in the making, perhaps even deserving of a permanent seat on the UN Security Council in the not too distant future.

<itunes:subtitle>Investigating a mysterious murder case in Bolivia that sheds light on a controversy dividing the country to this day.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In the early hours of April 16, 2009, a heavily armed special forces unit of the Bolivian police crept into a downtown hotel in the eastern city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. They made their way to two upstairs rooms and burst in. Within minutes, three European guests had been shot and killed. When news of the raid broke, the Bolivian authorities said little - except that the dead men had been plotting to kill Bolivia's left-wing president, Evo Morales, and had fiercely resisted arrest. Two other Europeans survived the raid on the Hotel de las Americas and were taken away to the capital La Paz for interrogation. So who were these mysterious Europeans? How did they come to be in Santa Cruz? And were they really - as the Bolivian authorities alleged - involved in a conspiracy to destabilise the South American country and assassinate its head of state? Or were they, as others have since suggested, the hapless victims of a bitter power struggle between autonomy activists in one of Bolivia's most prosperous regions and the first indigenous president in the country's history. Four years later, the disturbing answers behind this extraordinary episode are beginning to emerge. As filmmaker Risteard O' Domhnaill reveals in this multi-faceted investigation for People & Power, it is a story with an unusual cast and the most unlikely origins.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>After three decades of economic liberalisation, have China's communist ideals been discarded forever?</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Three decades of economic liberalisation have radically changed the face of China. With the number of Chinese billionaires increasing rapidly (it now has almost as many as the US and is closing in on the top spot), the communist ideals of the past seem to have faded beyond recognition. This revealing film from Jorg Winter and ORF looks at some of the possible consequences of China's growing love affair with money and wonders what has happened to the Marxist principles that the nation once paid homage to.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Less than three decades ago, it would have been unthinkable for a Russian premier to have exchanged public expressions of solidarity and goodwill with the head of the country's Orthodox Church. For years under communism the institution had been suppressed, its priests harassed by the authorities, its churches closed or given over to communal secular pursuits, its devotees scorned for their 'superstitious' adherence to doctrines that the state and the party regarded with deep suspicion.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>An investigation into the ritual killing of disabled Ghanaian children deemed to be possessed by evil spirits.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Every year an unknown number of children - most of them disabled in some way - are murdered in northern Ghana because of the belief that they are in some way possessed by evil spirits set on bringing ill fortune to those around them. The practice is the consequence of ancient traditions and customs and is shaped by poverty and ignorance in remote and often marginalised communities. But it is still infanticide and no less horrifying than the killing of children anywhere. For years NGOs and the Ghanaian authorities have tried advocacy and education in an attempt to eradicate the practice but with only marginal success. Well into the 21st century, Ghana's so-called spirit children are still being killed because they carry the blame for the misfortunes of everyday life. Award-winning Ghanaian investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas is determined to do something to stop this senseless slaughter. In this shocking and remarkable film for People & Power he sets out to track down and identify some of those responsible and to bring them to justice.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Will the growing activism of Cuba's leading political dissidents help end fifty years of communist rule?</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>After 53 years of revolution, Cubans are increasingly exasperated by the restrictions imposed on them by the country's change-averse communist regime. In spite of, or perhaps because of, recent modest economic reforms, activism is growing as the government's opponents overcome their fear of arrest and take to the streets. But it is not easy. Today, even the church based Ladies in White – a group of women relatives of imprisoned activists - say they are routinely spied on and arrested. Nevertheless, inspired by the Arab Spring, the Ladies are determined to keep up their protests, sensing that the regime's grip on power is fading and that sooner rather than later it will be forced to give way.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>We investigate whether the much-feared communist-era Securitate still controls the country from the shadows.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>It has been quite a year in Romania with the resignation of two prime ministers and near-impeachment of a president. This coupled with nationwide riots and a growing sense of injustice means that next month's parliamentary elections will be the most bitterly contested for decades. The power struggle between Traian Basescu, the right-wing president, and Victor Ponta, the left-wing prime minister, has grabbed all the headlines, but the story behind this struggle stretches back to Romania's communist past – and to the very moment when a firing squad put an end to Nicolai Ceausescu, Europe's last Stalinist dictator.</itunes:summary>
